The Star of Bethlehem
December 17, 2017, 11.00 - 12.00

The star of Bethlehem is a key Christmas symbol. What it really was has occupied people for centuries. Representations of the star in nativity scenes and religious imagery and nativity plays are as varied as are astrological calculations. Sometimes it is shown as a multi-rayed star, then again as a comet with a tail. The guided tour provides insight into local artistic interpretations as well as scientific explanations.

SUN, MOON AND STARS
SUN, MOON AND STARS
December 31, 2017, 11.00 - 12.00

What are stars: gods or celestial bodies? Omens or phenomena? Across the ages peoples have cultivated their own ideas about the sun, the moon and the stars, as a statue of the Aztec sun god Tonatiuh, amulets from Europe, and the example of a pocket sundial go to show. The guided tour explores how heavenly bodies were viewed, represented and interpreted across cultures with the help of a fascinating array of artefacts, ranging from everyday items to powerful ritual objects.

SECOND HOME BASEL
SECOND HOME BASEL
December 31, 2017, 14.00 - 15.30

Without migration Basel would possess fewer town mansions, no Roche Tower, and Lesser Basel would probably look quite different. Over the centuries, people from across the world and from all professions have found a second home in Basel and have helped to make the city what it is. Discover their traces on this historical tour of the city and get to hear some of their stories and histories.
